Here are a few suggestions on what to see

while visiting the ‘City by the Bay’

Alcatraz – You really must tour it!

Alcatraz

The ferry ride to the island offers beautiful views of the city.

Did you know that from 1969-1971 Indians occupied Alcatraz?  They declared they were taking back their land.

The currents, tides and the temperature of the water in the bay made it a perfect place for a maximum security prison.

We recommend the Audio Tour as it includes observations of guards and prisoners about life at “the Rock”.

Ride a Cable Car

Cable Car

Price is $3.00 each way and tickets can be purchased from the conductor as you board.

The view as you descend Hyde Street (on the Powell-Hyde line) down to the bay is spectacular.

Did you know the cable cars are actually powerless?  They are pulled by underground cables.  When the operator needs to stop, he disengages the car’s grip on the cable.  The car stops but the cable keeps moving.
